Women Watch Porn, Don’t Masturbate?

woman watching pornThe other day, I opened my RSS reader and saw the headline Study: Women buying more porn. This was intriguing for a number of reasons, the main one being that I’ve always suspected that women were watching porn in much larger numbers than they’ve traditionally been willing to admit. Perhaps now the truth was coming out?

To the best of my knowledge, porn is primarily a masturbatory aid (some find it a turn on to watch with a partner, but I get the sense that those people aren’t in the majority). According to the sexologist quoted in the article, “A lot of women who’ve been suppressed about getting sexual information are finding that there is an educational element to a number of adult films.” Not only that, “women are watching for the creative storyline and videography. Others use it as a tool for their own relationships.”

Let’s be honest: porn is by and large devoid of any creativity and most certainly the last place anyone needs to be looking for sex ed. Especially women, since porn is very rarely about women’s pleasure.

So, with that in mind, I call shenanigans on this assertion that women are watching porn for its educational and cinematic value. My guess: women are watching porn and getting off, but don’t want to admit it.

It’s becoming less of a taboo to admit to watching porn, but women are still too embarrassed to tell “researchers” that they actually masturbate, so they give them the modern-day equivalent of “I read Playboy for the articles.” That way, they look sexually adventurous but don’t have to admit to touching their naughty bits.

To those women, I say: You’re not fooling anyone (except, perhaps, credulous journalists). So stop trying. There’s nothing shameful about enjoying pornography for its intended purpose. I promise you won’t go blind.

Several years ago, I was surprised when a single female (platonic) friend of mine passed along an Asian compilation porn DVD to me. She had purchased the DVD and was (in her vernacular) “enjoying herself” while viewing the title over a period of some weeks. She’s from Eastern Europe and possibly a bit more straightforward in regards to her movie viewing habits? Since I knew nothing about women back then (and next to nothing now), I was quite taken aback. But it makes perfect sense, and I believe the conclusions reached in your article are completely accurate.

I think your comments are fairly accurate. But there is in my experience some differences in the way men and women use porn. Men use porn to get off – and women use porn to get off OR to get hot.

Does that make sense at all?

I definitely think there are bolder women out there, like your friend, who are perfectly willing to admit that they watch porn. I meet a lot of them in my line of work. I sort of wonder what the difference is between them and the ones who are too embarrassed to admit it…

relax my friend,we can spend many more lifetimes and still not have a clue about women, but after awhile you stop worrying about it,and just enjoy them for what they are. i had an ex girlfriend that told me i would go crazy trying to figure women out,so i should stop trying.it winds up that she was right.
    Alison:
it makes sense that women can use porn similarly to men,but tend to deny it because of upbringing that tells them it is wrong
to masturbate.it is becoming more acceptable for men,but tends to remain taboo for women

I watch porn out of fascination and horror. sometimes i think it’s hot, but mostly i am just curious. i don’t masturbate to it or otherwise. i think the extremely hardcore stuff is fascinating and i just wonder how fucked up these women are to do this to themselves. these ladies by and large are not enjoying this. they are in pain half the time and are high the other half. while there are a few very vocal exceptions like sasha grey, who drown out naysayers (and i doubt the veracity of what she says too, and believe in 10 years a whole other storyline will emerge about her). i am not anti-porn but i think watching it with blinders on is dangerous and does the women a disservice, and the men, to a degree.
but to answer the original question. if I get turned on by porn, i don’t masturbate. it’s more about internalizing it and giving thought to it and ‘getting hot’ as someone said.
