What’s the Cost of a Fetish?

With the global economy in the shape it is, people are talking a lot about saving money lately. And while the porn industry overall has been the subject of discussion in the media, what consumers are expected to pay for porn really isn’t. Which got me thinking…is it more expensive to be into an off-the-beaten-path niche? How are our nations fetishists weathering the recession?
So, I did some research. I picked some niches (the ones the VideoBox members bitched the most when they were posted) and went over to The Best Porn and noted the prices of the top 20 sites for each, as well as the top 20 general hardcore sites for comparison. I used the price for one month of membership, excluding trials, but including any discounts available.
On average, it costs $20.90 to belong to a general hardcore site (although I think we all know better deals exist). The only fetish that came in under that was balloons (I have no idea why). Latex, pissing and trannies, by comparison, all topped $30 a month and the rest fell in between.
The average cost of a fetish site about $7 more per month than a mainstream porn site. Maybe it’s the costumes or the extra “hazard pay” they have to give the models, but overall, it’s cheaper to be vanilla.
Note: as someone who makes her living in this industry, I am certainly aware that free porn sites exist, but I can’t condone using them exclusively. When people don’t pay for porn, porn stops being made. Period. If you watch it, support it.

G man says:Is this the nerdiest porn blog entry ever? Alison, I think you may need to get out of the house more.

alison says:I dunno, G man. This one was pretty dorky too: http://blog.videobox.com/blog/index.php/2008/11/19/thirty-eight-percent-of-porn-stars-do-anal/

Thank you, Alison, and I strongly second that (e)motion!
And I’m a big fan of this blog – a refreshingly intelligent, enlightened, and (self)hate-free forum*
Brava!

Kong says:How come swallowing isn’t considered a fetish?
Damn, I should have said “how cum”. Oh well.

alison says:Kong,
My criteria was that it was a slightly off-the-beaten-path interest. Swallowing is not generally considered a fetish, although I agree it happens so infrequently that you might consider it a niche.

Kong says:Are you speaking from personal experience when you say it happens infrequently?

Personal experience as a *porn watcher* perhaps!

Oruba says:Supply and Demand. Pissing tranny midgets are a little harder to come by.
Perhaps niche’s cachet also plays a factor. I don’t why, but I always felt that people into latex usually hailed from a higher strata of society than the rest of us. Maybe latex sites cost more simply because their customers can afford it.

alison says:Oruba,
Gimme a half hour and a high-speed connection and I bet I could find you a pissing tranny midget.
Having known some latex aficionados, I’d say that the folks who have the cash to buy the stuff certainly are a select few. Maybe expensive fetishes like that cost more because they cost so much to make. And compared to buying a an inflatable latex bodybag for oneself, $50 a month seems like a bargain?
