I had the chance to interview Belladonna at the Adult Entertainment Expo in 2009. If you love her movies, you’ll be glad to hear that she’s even more charming, beautiful and intelligent in person. Even I will admit that I was a little starstruck by her.

Bella and I talked about her herpes scare, her upcoming autobiography, how she feels about the “fucked up” things she did when she was younger, rape fantasies and more. Read on for the full interview.

Alison: I actually heard that you were working on an autobiography…

Belladonna: I am, actually, yes. [laughs] It was one of those things I didn’t want to do for a long time because I thought, I don’t want to just write a book about, for example, when I read Jenna’s book, it was like I thought there was going to be so much more in there, you know? And I don’t want to leave anything out. So it might become – I don’t even know if this exists – an autobiography in different volumes, yes, because I think there needs to be a certain volume for each part of my life.

Alison: Sure, I mean, and you’re not dead, so you’ve got a lot left to go.

Belladonna: Right. [laughs] Is it weird doing an autobiography at 27?

Alison: I don’t think so. You’ve lived what seems to me to be a pretty exciting life.

Belladonna: Really, my age should be sixty, because I’ve done it all. And I did it at a young age, so maybe that makes up for it.

Alison: Do you think that having done it so young, are there things you would go back and redo?

Belladonna: Yes and no, because you think “Oh, you know, I would’ve done it differently.” But would I be the same person I am today? And I don’t want to not be the same person I am today, so no, I guess.

Alison: So you’re pretty happy with where you are right now?

Belladonna: There’s times where I’m like, “I’m glad I did all that fucked up stuff when I was young because I realize how great it is to not be in that type of scenario. You know?

Alison: You have something to compare it to.

Belladonna: I don’t have to wonder what it would’ve been like if I tried that. I did.

Alison: A while back, you posted on your MySpace that you were leaving the industry over a scare you had had. Are you happy to be back? Do you feel like that changed you in any way or impacted you?

Belladonna: It made me realize – I mean, I was always slowly getting towards being more careful with my body – just really not wanting to put myself in certain situations. But, you know, it taught me a lot. And I think that also, it helped a lot of people outside the industry an insight on how, you know, this shit happens. And this is what it feels like and you’re not alone. There’s tons of people who have herpes, you know?

Alison: It’s a lot of stigma.

Belladonna: It is. And you know what? It’s something that people should be comfortable talking about, asking questions about. But I also don’t work as much as I used to. I’m very particular about who I’m with and what tests I get. So I think that should set an example for everyone in the industry to be like, “Just because we do this, it doesn’t mean we can’t be careful, healthy people,” you know? And be safe!

Alison: So who is on your list? Who do you like to work with these days?

Belladonna: Okay, I’ll tell you all the girls and the guys. There’s a lot. Girls that I love to work with are girls that get wet, girls that you can watch get turned on. Because – I don’t know if anyone else knows this – but when a girl’s turned on, her pussy gets wet. [laughs]

Alison: [laughs] I’ve heard that rumor.

Belladonna: It’s like why is this such a mystery, you know? I can literally, on two of my hands, show the amount of girls that I’ve been with that actually get wet. Out of hundreds, you know? And that says something to me. So those girls that I would tell you do get wet are: Kimberly Kane, Joanna Angel, Sasha Grey, Bobbi Starr, Lexi Belle. I know there’s more. Katsuni. There’s so many. Jenna Haze.

Alison: I heard you actually fisted Bobbi Starr on a webcam.

Belladonna: I did, but she wouldn’t let me fist her ass. I think because she was like, “Wait! I want to do this on my own time first.” I was like, “Alright, alright.”

Alison: Was it fun anyway?

Belladonna: Yeah, it was fun. I like girls that are not just…there’s more to them than just a face, you know? Like, they’re still beautiful, but they’re smart, intelligent and I like them. I like that.

Alison: How about the guys?

Belladonna: Okay, guys. My ultimate porn guy is definitely Rocco Siffredi. Because not only is he a good-looking man, but he’s natural. He has his pubic hair still, which a lot of guys shave down now. I don’t know. He’s sexy, he’s a man. And he has this presence. When he walks in the room, you fucking feel it, you know? And I’ve told this before to girls, the second you see him, something will come over you and you’ll do anything that he wants you to do. You don’t know why. Everyone does.

Ah, okay, so he, CJ Wright, Mr. Pete, James Deen, Rico Strong. I like a variety of men. And there’s probably a ton more. Lexington Steele, I love.

Alison: He’s super nice.

Belladonna: He’s so nice. And he’s gigantic. Like, [makes hand motion that indicates his dick is a foot and a half long]. It’s insane.

Alison: [Holding hands like Bella's] Is that about right?

Belladonna: [laughs] It’s that big! But, you know, I wouldn’t want to sleep with that every day, but I definitely want to play with it sometimes.

Alison: On our site [VideoBox], when we release scenes that are a little more rough or intense, there’s a feeling amongst some of our members that the women really aren’t enjoying themselves and I feel like you probably have a really interesting take on that.

Belladonna: Here’s the thing: when you see something that you’ve never put yourself in that type of situation before, then it’s really hard for you to understand. I think there’s a lot of people out there that like to fantasize and roleplay and even though they know it’s not reality. I know hundreds of girls who fantasize about being raped. Because they know it’s not real. They’re actually choosing the person that they want to live out the fantasy with. And that’s where they don’t understand that. There’s a lot of guys that don’t like to be rough with girls, too. In porn. Who are just like, “I’m not into it.” But you know, when people are put together and they’re both there because they want to be there, whatever they want to do should be okay as long as they’re happy about it – as long as they do it safely. . So you’ve got to understand that if you’ve never tried it before then you really can’t be the best judge of that.

Alison: That’s true. Speaking of which, how do you sort of go into a scene? What do you think beforehand? What do you talk to your partner about before you guys start?

Belladonna: I guess it just depends on who it is. But most of the time, it’s very casual. It’s like, ah, you know, the month before I booked them for the scene I’m like, you know I get to choose who I want to be with. And then the day they get there, I’m flirty and I flirt with them because I love to flirt and it starts really naturally even off camera. And then I just love watching them enjoy me no matter what I’m doing to them. And pleasing them is like, “ah.” A dream come true.

Alison: Is that your favorite part of your job?

Belladonna: [sighs] There’s so many favorites. I love being able to please people. I love seeing the expression on their face. I love giving them the time of their lives. And also giving myself the exploration sex. I like traveling the world, I like roleplaying, I get to shoot in all different locations. So many favorites about this job. And I’ve actually literally grown up on camera. My sexuality grew up on camera. I knew nothing when I got in the business.

Alison: It’s almost like an autobiography itself.

Belladonna: It is! It’s a video biography, right?

Alison: Well Bella, thank you so much for talking to me.

Review: The Girlfriend Experience

A lot has been made of Sasha Grey’s role in Steven Soderbergh’s new film, The Girlfriend Experience, especially by the adult press. Our news outlets have a serious (self-hating?) obsession with porn performers “crossing over” into the mainstream and a porn actress making an independent film with an Oscar-winning director is certainly a far cry from, say, Zombie Strippers.

The Girlfriend Experience is about an expensive New York call girl named Chelsea and her boyfriend, a personal trainer, set during the fall of 2008 while the presidential campaign and the recession were both in full swing. The film follows them around to a variety of meetings where they both whore themselves out, albeit in slightly different ways.

It won’t come as a surprise to the many people who’ve noted that her porn performances tend to be a bit lackluster and flat that Sasha played her character competently, but without much emotion. The problem is, I’m not sure whether this was simply a mediocre performance or how her character was intended to come off. Perhaps both.

A complete lack of character development coupled with a meandering storyline is what sunk this movie. By the time things actually began to happen in the film (internet drama, forbidden love, relationship turmoil), I didn’t care. It wasn’t even clear exactly what was occurring at some junctures because Chelsea had no discernible motives or emotions.

To put it bluntly, The Girlfriend Experience was not a good movie. But it wasn’t Sasha Grey’s fault.

The reason I say it wasn’t Sasha’s fault is that she was barely even a character in the film she was supposed to be starring in. We see more of the back of Sasha’s head than any other part of her. When she’s not facing away from the camera, she’s often visually obscured by curtains, beams, darkness or furniture. These angles were so noticeable that it felt like Steven Soderbergh’s directing was the real “star” of the film.

Overall, it wasn’t a movie I enjoyed or would recommend seeing, but I didn’t hate it. I would say, however, that if you want to watch a Sasha Grey movie, Fashionistas: Safado would be a better choice.
