virushopper was correct in mentioning P2P as a major source of free porn. You can find nearly every Brazzers, Naughty America and most studio porn releases on a P2P site the same day it is released to the website or DVD porn sellers. Most of these P2P sites (more commonly known as torrent sites), operate out of European countries that have lax laws on copyright protections.

Keep in mind that unlike the RIAA that has prosecuted people for sharing music. Porn is not embraced by the American Government. In fact, it is often shunned. Meaning that even if the porn producers combined forces to prosecute people file sharing porn, they would have little or no support from our government or our court system.

I think there are a lot of companies that are still making money at the moment. Some of them are pretty flat – no growth, but no decline, so they’re making the same money they were last year. I suspect a lot are slowly leaking cash/hoping the bleeding stops soon, but are still profitable (just less so than last year).

virushopper – I think the real reason the industry hasn’t put money into that is that “the industry” really isn’t a cohesive unit when it comes to anything. Be it piracy or battling obscenity charges or any other issue that affects us all as a whole, no one can seem to agree to pitch in and come together. No one is interested in helping anyone else out until they’re the ones in trouble.

I always believed technology went a little too fast for society to catch up. With that said we all know once one P2P medium falls another takes its place and chances are free porn is going to be there. I’m curious as well why the industry hasn’t put more money in researching what areas needs to be fixed.
