In Praise of Manuel Ferrara
I know that porn isn’t about the guys, but the fact is that horrible male talent can ruin a scene with even the hottest girl. That’s why I love Manuel Ferrara. (That and how incredibly gracious he was when I was drunkenly nattering on at him after the AVN awards)
I hear all the time about guys who make a scene unwatchable (cough, Lee Stone, cough) and it’s refreshing that there a few woodsmen out there who add something to their scenes instead of serving as an annoying distraction.
The three main reasons Manuel is one of the all-time greatest male performers:
1. He gets the best performances out of the girls
A boring partner can make a scene with the most enthusiastic girl into a disappointment. Manuel gets the girls so hot and crazy that they can’t help but have a great scene. He has without a doubt caused more orgasms on camera than any male talent I’ve ever seen (although big ups go out to Steve Holmes on that front as well). Every star I’ve ever talked to, when asked who her favorite guys to work with are, says Manuel Ferrara without hesitation. He turns them on and they turn you on. Win-win situation in my opinion.
2. He’s a gentleman to his co-stars
There are quite a few guys out there who get into porn for the wrong reason. They seem have something to prove. They don’t respect women and they can seriously fuck up a scene by getting way to aggressive and degrading. Manuel clearly loves women. He can get rough, but he always treats them with respect and takes them to the edge without going too far. That’s sexy.
3. He directs hot scenes
Directors are at least as, if not more important than the male talent. They are the ones who ultimately decide whether to use gauzy filters or move the camera every 15 seconds or focus on a guy’s taint for extended periods of time. A great director loves women, loves sex and wants to turn people on. I think Manuel has been such a successful director because he really does have all of those qualities.
Good male talent is hard to find and I am very thankful for the handful of guys who aren’t boring stuntcocks or assholes. Manuel Ferrara is definitely in the upper echelon of male porn talent and he deserves recognition (in addition to his AVN awards, I guess).

I believe this is an often overlooked and underrated factor. I concur that Manuel Ferrara is one of the top male talents currently active. I would also include Mark Ashley, Erik Everhard, and Michael Stefano on that short list. Undoubtedly there are others, but those are the names that presently come to mind. As to Mr. Ferrara, I believe many of his directorial efforts are available on a premium channel near you. Series such as Evil Anal, Fucked On Sight, and Slutty And Sluttier. I particularly favor Fucked On Sight, as it is filmed POV style.

I’m a fan of the Evil Anal series. I think Manuel excels at anal scenes in particular because of point #2. I definitely agree on Mark Ashley, Erik Everhard and Michael Stefano. If we were making a short list, I’d probably add Tommy Gunn and Steve Holmes too.

It seems that the ability to get and maintain an erection is all that really matters to most directors when they make their selection. I do realize that it is hard to find talent who can consistently perform with 20 people watching but I really can’t believe that the industry couldn’t find much better “studs” if they bothered.
As a man I am basically bored when I watch a scene with a guy who doesn’t look like he is really turned on by the girl he is fucking or who is just utterly unimaginative. It’s even worse when it comes to rough sex scenes. They can be sooo hot … but I loathe watching a misogynist degrade a girl. If you don’t like women stay the hell out of porn – both acting and directing.
With Manuel Ferrara you get the feeling that he basically wants to fuck the world and that he is genuinely thrilled to do his scenes. Even his roughest anal poundings always have an element of reciprocity, tenderness and even humour as well. To me he is the greatest male star since – and quite similar to – Rocco Siffredi.
The only problem I have with Ferrara is his rather long foreskin which I find aesthetically unpleasing (especially when it comes to the cum shots).
